You have every right to peaceably travel through their liberal sanctuary.

Travel according to FOPA, bring a copy with you, leave the high cap mags at home, lock it up, and shut (if pulled over).
This ^^^^, except don't worry about the HC mags, it doesn't matter.
Follow FOPA but remember ammo is not covered under FOPA so possessing the firearm is fine in DC, possessing the ammo is not.
Just follow 495 around DC. If you go around the east side, 495 dips into DC for about 500'.
Don't worry about MD, just stay legal as far as FOPA goes and you are legal to travel through MD. MD does have a mag capacity law but it is only for purchase and sell, not for possession so unless you plan to purchase a mag while there you are good to go.
Through MD just drive smart (whoever it was suggesting driving 80 to get through there is wrong) and keep a low profile and stay legal for FOPA and enjoy your trip.

IIRC there is some question as to whether mags are covered, since technically are not the firearm.
    Better safe than sorry.

I think what you are thinking about is whether MD considered a gun to be loaded if the mag is loaded but separate from the gun. I'm pretty sure MD doesn't not consider a loaded mag as a loaded gun.
Mags are covered by FOPA as part of the firearm, but even if they aren't, the mag capacity limit (10 rounds) in MD doesn't apply unless you are buying or selling.
The OP just needs to stay out of DC because of the ammo law.
