Question How do I get the gun finish back on my SP101 cylinder?

    Hello all,

Any suggestions on how can I get the black finish back on the cylinder of my SP101? I shot it a few times and now I have this ashy looking discoloration.

    Thanks.

Try Hoppes # 9 with a soft vinyl brush ! Our Taurus ultra-Lite has the same finish and will only clean up a bit better, it was made to be rust resistant to a degree ! MDT

Not enough contrast on the pix. Could just be on the surface and needs a good cleaning. That's my guess at this point unless you can post better pix.

If it's chambered in .327 Federal, sell it to me; then it's not YOUR SP101 anymore and you don't need to worry about the finish. Problem solved.

I'm not sure of the WD40 choice, but a light coat of gun oil should darken and smooth out the finish a bit, at least until the it evaporates.

    Hello all,

Sorry for the late response but work, kids, and wife got the best of me the last several days.

I tried the WD40 with Hoppe's with no luck . Next step is going over to see my smith to see about bluing.

    Thank you all your help!

Use kroil or pbblaster ,wd40 is not intended for firearm use as it's a water dissipator and can dull the finish over time. It can be used to clean something up but you always need to follow with a gun oil such as kroil, clp, rem oil or whatnot after. Pb blaster is a good choice if no kroil is available and can be bought at lowes ect.

You didn't use a lead removal cloth on that did you? They remove blue. Keeping NIB look but shooting gun are two incompatible things. Efforts to remove signs of use often result in loss of finish and outright damage. Getting your gun reblued every time you shoot it isn't realistic. Clean with good bore solvent and 100% cotton patch, wipe down with a good gun oil.
