Re: Check this turd of an SKS out! Full restoration coming soon.
I got my SKS off my father in-law. He got it over a bar bet in the late 1990's. Shot a full 30rd mag through it and put it in the back of his safe dirty
I got it and it has a tiny bit of surface rust on the barrel and trigger area.
Stripped it, cleaned the piss out of, lubed up with some frog lube (still need to get some Liberal Tears lube) then did a Bullpup to it.
Had a pair of pop up iron sights and have since added a Red/Green dot reflex sight
A lot of fun to shoot now!!!!pup.jpgRetired US Army

Re: Check this turd of an SKS out! Full restoration coming soon.
I found a good deal on a surplus gas tube but I’m still looking for an affordable piston. I want it up and running before I do anything with the metal.
I have a 2nd still in cosmoline that has next to zero finish left but very little to no rust at all so that would be a cool looking battlefield pick up rifle which was actually on a battlefield.
If I get this current rifle going what it has going for it is the barrel. Internally it looks brand new.
I have all the time in the world to work on it but I have limited dexterity in my hands the last few months so it’s dragging out.

I have a question on rust removal for old firearms like you are working on. Would Evaporust work for heavy rust removal with out harming the parts? I use Evaporust on tools and Auto parts with excellent results.

Hodgie, been waiting 2 yrs to see that sks finished. Spent a half hour earlier looking for one. Saw a couple around $35/40. I feel your pain! Especially, when remembering the days that $50 more would get the whole rifle! I'm assuming you would take an aftermarket piston.
They were on the parts list for SKS on the Tapco website but there was no price listed. I'm keeping an eye out for you.

Best wishes with the project! What you're doing is way beyond my abilities, though I could learn, in my spare time, if I had any.
