Are you gonna blast with soda or a real abrasive?

Bringing this back from the dead just for the Hell of it. The SKS is a fine rifle but on the bottom of my short list for SHTF.

I don't think soda would put much of a dent in some of the parts like the mag box or barrel and front sight base so it's looking like aluminum oxide but before I do that I'm going to research it a bit more. I've had a few guys tell me good things about crushed walnut but I think it might be to soft for this. There's ways glass but it's pricy and I've never come across it locally.

You've see some of the work I've done and I'd love to work on that SKS.

That citrastrip would cut through that stuff a lot.
As for the bolt and gas pistons I recommend a Dermal and these buffer wheels. I got real good results on some pistol bbls I just referbed.

before you blast I'd put it through an electrolysis bath so it will get the rust out of the bore and impossible to reach places https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54ADeB6V1rQ

I use an electrolysis bath like that and it works great for rusty parts. It dissolves only the rust and does not harm the "good" metal.

But before you use this on a firearm you need to read up on "hydrogen embrittlement". Under electrolysis hydrogen gets incorporated in the steel and can make it brittle. I think this can happen under the derusting conditions so check. It can be reversed by baking the part but you need to be concerned with the temper and it adds complexity.

Well it's almost two years later and I am now getting back to this project. The rifle was cleaned of all cosmo fully disassembled and I replaced the springs and a few other small parts that were shot. I put it all back together today to test fire and after an hour or so of trouble shooting using parts of my working SKS rifles I know that I need a gas piston and gas tube.

The good news is the bore is in excellent condition and after sitting for almost 2 years it doesn't look any shittier then it did when I 1st started.

Anyone out there have either of these two things laying around for a reasonable price or trade please LMK.

I never knew Hodgie was into scuba diving and found someone’s SKS that they lost at the bottom of the lake. Good luck with your project.
