Mixed Magnum & Non-Magnum Pistol Primers
I have about 60 primers that were left in a primer tube & I am not sure if they are magnum or non-magnum. I do know that they are large pistol primers. If I were to use these for mild 44 magnum plinking loads (8 or 9 grains of Unique pushing a 240 gr. LSWC) would it make a big difference? Any safety concerns?

Re: Mixed Magnum & Non-Magnum Pistol Primers
I sold my .357 mag revolver, but still had some magnum primers. I used them for light loads for my 9MM without any problem. I'm not saying you should, but that was my experience.

Re: Mixed Magnum & Non-Magnum Pistol Primers
I use Winchester large pistol primers in that load range. They're labeled for standard or magnum loads. One of the reasons I use them is so I only need to stock one primer for both uses. They work fine. However S&B has lately been used due to their price. Learned awhile back to label equipment with a piece of masking tape and magic marker. So if I do walk away from them, or dig something out to use I'll know what the last settings were and what I was using it for. Doesn't take much to distract me.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Re: Mixed Magnum & Non-Magnum Pistol Primers
I use CCI magnums with 8 gr of Unique and a 240 with no problem. I didn't want to stock 2 styles and needed the magnums for the load with 296 so I just used them in the Unique load from the get go.
That said, if you are really concerned and know who made them, call the maker. I know Winchester color codes the priming compound for various primers. The manufacturer may be able to set you straight.

Re: Mixed Magnum & Non-Magnum Pistol Primers
If it is not close to a max load with Unique you should be fine. If you load with 296 or H110 you could use them for that. After a well seasoned .44 mag guy on another forum said his groups shrink drastically using a LPP vs a magnum LPP I have been using non magnums with 296. My groups did shrink quite a bit vs the magnums.(not for cold weather though)

Re: Mixed Magnum & Non-Magnum Pistol Primers
Use them up. You will be fine as long as you are staying under anything that might get close to excessive pressure and the 8-9 grain of Unique would be well under that.

Usually the priming compound are different colors. That's what federal does anyway.

Re: Mixed Magnum & Non-Magnum Pistol Primers
What if you loaded them using a 44 Special load and shot them out of a 44 Magnum... like a 44 special +P?
