Winchester model 24 1940s Problem with forend
Hello and Hi.
Hope someone can give me a clue.
I have just received a Winchester model 24 SxS sr points to 1940s. The problem I am having is closing after attaching the forend. With the forend off it will close right up. I have used a candle to flux the metal parts to see where it may be binding. It really does not show anything in me eyes that looks very odd. There are marks on both sides of the barrels but seems to be normal.
I welcome all ideas as I am out of them
Thank you in advance

So the barrels lock into the receiver with no problems, are you than having issues putting the forend onto the barrels? If you can get the forend onto the barrels, how does it open up?

Re: Winchester model 24 1940s Problem with forend
Made me dig my 24 out and give it a good cleaning, thanks. Have a couple suggestions you may want to look at.
Numeric has an exploded parts diagram if you need it: http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufact...3/24-41808.htm
Remove the forearm shoe to check the locking slide and extractors.
The little red mark is the slide, should slide in its channel. I push the extractors against my bench to check movement. Also the guides in the extractor channel above and below the slide should have some movement. One is just above the screw in photo. I clean and lightly lube while I'm there.
Since I was at it I removed the recoil pad and one bolt will remove the stock. Takes a long screwdriver. There's a washer in there that may stay or drop out unnoticed. (Edit) There may be some stiffness due to the cocking mechanism. Some cleaning and lube may help.
Hardest part was lining up bolt and attaching stock. I would not call the opening and closing stiff but it probably is more noticeable than my more modern doubles. Not a gunsmith, just an enthusiast. Good luck.Last edited by cephas; October 16th, 2016 at 01:37 PM.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

That you very much for your photos and well explained also. I am going to go all the way over all parts you said. I have already tested some and they checked out. No for the more difficult areas I guess. I will post what happens when I finish and am shooting . I really do like this one. I think I like the weight the most even though it is heavy. I again thank you. Very helpful.

Ok. I dug in. I never did dry fire and that was the first thing I should have done. Turns out the right side. Front trigger is not resetting and so is not able to fire. I did not pull that apart and leave it for a qualified gunsmith. Thanks again and I hope to use it soon in Maryland.

Here's a description of tearing down the receiver.

Not encouraging you to do it if its out of your comfort zone, but you may find it interesting. It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.
