I have an M&P 22 compact, the last time I cleaned it then took it to the range it stopped locking open after the last shot.
Any ideas what the problem could be ?

There is not much energy available in the .22 cartridge- they get sluggish when powder, residue, and the usual nose nuggets and butt fuzz build up where you might not normally clean.

Try detail stripping it to remove all the gunk, or at least soak it well in Hoppes or something similar and blow dry it with compressed air.
If that doesn't work, bring it up and let me have a test fire in the shop.

Ok thanks Sean. I did give it a very thorough last time but I'll do it again. Who knows, I may have dislodged some dirt & moved it instead of removing it.
Does the mag have any effect on the slide locking open ?

    It usually does.
If the mag is filthy, it might cause drag on the follower and consequently not have enough power to lift the slide stop.
be sure to strip the mag and clean all it's parts, too.

Sounds good, it's all now on my to do list for tomorrow, & hopefully I'll get a chance to get back to the range tomorrow when I finish to try it out.
    Thanks again buddy

Also consider any change in ammo. Low velocity stuff has a tendency to do just that.

I'm using the same ammo I've used for years, mostly Federal, & I haven't used any low velocity stuff, but thanks for the suggestion

Hmm...when you cleaned it did you oil/grease the rails?

Are the magazine springs noticeably soft? Does it lock back with one mag and not the other?

Did you clean the recoil spring?
I'm only here for the wood c-rings.

I took the mags apart & cleaned them but still no help, in fact it got worse, not only would it not lock after last shot, but it stove piped a couple times then stopped feeding altogether. Took the gun all apart & scrubbed it real good, carefully oiled it and that did the trick. There was a brass bristle on the table from my brush when I was done, not sure if it was from today or if one was stuck in there from the last time I cleaned it. So anyway everything is good now.
