Load and target for 7.62x51
It's been nearly a year since I took my AIAW for a "walk". I thought that with a precision rifle class coming up, it might be a good idea to take it to the range and see if the scope still held somewhere close to zero or dial it in if it had been inadvertently knocked around in the safe.
Since the last time I zeroed it four years ago was for 200 yds. and had locked in the scope adjustments so it wouldn't have a wandering zero, I had to hold under .7 mills on the major vertical stadia on the 1" orange target dot situated at 100 yds.
(Hint: it really helps when you know the dope for your bullet through all the distances you shoot...)
Seems like it shot just fine with the reloads. Good to go, eh?
The load data is on the target. You may need to work up to this load in yours...

Re: Load and target for 7.62x51
42.5gr IMR 4064 under 175 SMKs works in just about every 308 I've put it through, bolt or semi. Only changes are OAL.
Nice shooting

Excellent. Is the federal match your go to primer?
Whats that group look like when your wife shoots it? (just kidding I hear she's also an excellent shooter)It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Re: Load and target for 7.62x51
You could have saved me a lot of time four years ago and just given me your load! Glad that I landed on your recipe...
I only use Fed GM210M primers after I've sorted bullets and brass by weight, did the case prep on all the brass, and looking for uber accuracy. The wife's groups? As you would expect after me getting dusted by her at the range for years, they're thinner and shorter.
Thanks, I'm trying - I think I've got the right load for the rifle. We had it out again today in PERFECT conditions and walked the steel to 700 yds (the range max) without a hiccup. Ready for the precision rifle class on Sunday...- bamboomaster

Re: Load and target for 7.62x51
All you had to do was ask brother.
Not "my" recipe.
Its what matches Federal GM 175grSMK as close as possible. I think the 42.5 IMR it's a bit hotter having shot it and comparing data from those hand loads, factory FGM, and M118LR and using data out of The Modular Sniper Data Book.

Re: Load and target for 7.62x51
I may have to try this load out. I just bought a heavy barrel Ruger for shooting suppressed and I currently run 168gr Amax w/ 41gr IMR4895 thru my AR10 and it does well.Going to mount my scope today and start breaking the Ruger in.

2.800" is general length to play with. That will be mag length for an AR10
