To add to your hypothetical, Maryland has a registration requirement. Said Father should have or should be in the process of registering all his firearms with Maryland. There is a grace period, of thirty days. The funny thing is there no current penalty for non compliance. If you get the guns confiscated for some reason it will clearly complicate retrieval. have fun in Maryland.

The father moved to MD on or about 1990. I've found no registration requirement prior to the law passed in Oct. 2013, therefore, he is exempt IMO. The problematic part I see is crossing the state line.
