We have a herd, same ones, of 7-8 doe running through our neighborhood. They wait until just before the roses bloom, to chomp them off. They're just like the damned groundhogs, who wait just until the tomatoes in my garden are ripe to dig into them.

I've used Havahart traps to get rid of 7 of them in the last two years.

Can't shoot 'em, as our neighborhood has 1-3 acre lots. Not really "country."

I used to pop the squirrels with my Ruger Mk II .22 pistol and after bagging 54 of them, the yard is pretty much squirrel-free.

No matter what repellent you use, you will have to alternate yearly. Find 2 methods that work, I use Deer Off one year and a mix of egg and water the next. The deer get used to any repellent if it is used all the time.

As far as scaring them off. I have literally smacked them on the butt and they still come back. If I throw something at them they come closer to see what I threw. They are rodents with hooves, your best bet is to plant things they don't eat. Oh and roses are ice cream to them, so either fence them in or dig them up, they will always be a target lunch for the deer.

I don't know how you feel about fences but...

get some strong fishing line (mono) and make a fence out of it. I've heard it works extremly well as the deer can't see it so they don't know what the hell is going on and they run away. If they always come through the same path to your house set it up there and hope it works :P
The first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.

Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.

When I planted trees with a park service we used concentraded garlic. They came sealed in a container that looked like a small pen with a clip on it that you had bust open one side. I'm not sure where they got them from. So I guess garlic will work.
