A 4" vise seems more than a sufficient size for an upper block.

Before you get a tratidional vice block look at the Magpul Bev Block.

    https://www.magpul.com/products/fire...-block-ar15-m4

It will hold the upper to allow you to install things like the forward assist and ejection port cover. But when installing the barrel it also engages the barrel extension so torque is not applied to the aluminum upper receiver. It can also be used as a lower vice block as well.

I just did an upper build with this and it worked perfect. I wish I had had it (and a bench and vice) when I had built the lower a while back.

I have a 6" vice and it was more than adequate.

The Magpul Bev block works well, I have one. Primary Arms runs them on sale fairly regular. I like it better than my Brownells reaction rod knockoff.

Depends if you are using a pin style upper block or the type that sandwiches the upper. I have a no mar vice set that works good but would be tight on a 4 inch vice. Also if you want to cheap out, just use a magpul pmag and leave the upper on the lower. Easy $10 vice block

4 inch Craftsman vise and NoMar blocks. Works just fine for barrel nut removal, and my RRA needed 2 foot of pipe on the end of an 18 inch breaker bar.
