Why is 22 mag ammo so expensive?

I wanted to buy some 22 mag ammo today but all the gun shop had was a box of V Max that was $18.99. I'll check out some other places on my day off. I remember seeing regular CCI ammo and various other brands before.

And anything other than "common" stuff will always be higher.

I doubt .22 magnum ammo will ever be much less than 30 cents per round again. Stuff always was expensive, back when a brick of Remington Thunderbolt .22 LR was selling for $10, 50 rounds of Win Mag was $7.99. Yhe lowest price I've seen in 2016 was $14.99 for 50 rounds of CCI Maxi-Mag. The self defense stuff is $19.99 to $25.99 for 50 rounds. Worse than the price is the very spotty availability of .22 Mag ammo in most areas.

I love my .22 mag Marlins so I feel your pain. I currently have ~800 rounds of .22 mag on hand and I just sold ~400 rounds within the last 2 months. The cheapest I've seen is 14.99 for 50.
