Re: Punxsutawney Groundhog Festival 2016
I went to the ceremony every year from 1989 to 2009. I was appointed as an Ambassador of the Groundhog Club for being a non-resident who helped to spread the legend of Punxsutawney Phil. When I went in 1989 I think there were 1800 people there. People pitched tents to stay there all night before the ceremony. It was starting to get more popular as the next year there were 2400 people. I saw Bill Murray there in 1992 when the Groundhog Day movie was in production. One of the Inner Circle members told me that when Bill Murray went back to the film site in Illinois he ordered a re-write of the script based on what he saw from being at the actual ceremony. The weather would be anything from 15 below to 40 degrees and raining. After the movie came out it just took off. I remember one year on a weekend it was calculated that 38,000 people were there.
