Re: Got my renewal notice with a strange instruction
I'd carry and secure it with the deputies.

Re: Got my renewal notice with a strange instruction
Ok, one of two things is happening here. Either you did not recognize my sarcasm, or, you live under the big rock way out in the woods. I googled it, and about ten pages of courthouse shootings popped up. I'm going to assume you thought I was being serious when I said none of us ever heard of one.

Re: Got my renewal notice with a strange instruction
If this is a multiple-choice question, I'll go with Option A. My apologies.
As for Option B, according to some in my more-urban family I am out in the woods, but not quite under a big rock, yet (Wifey-Poo may opt for either a trip to the burn barrel or a trip to the land fill, but a bona-fide headstone would not totally be out of the question, when that time comes).

Re: Got my renewal notice with a strange instruction
I think I've figured it out, playing devil's advocate...
The Sheriff may be telling you not to attempt to CC it into the courthouse (obviously illegal). It should be much better worded though something like "be sure to alert the deputies you are legally carrying and they will gladly assist in securing your firearm while you renew, keeping everyone in compliance with the law".

Re: Got my renewal notice with a strange instruction
If during the renewal process you fail the NICS, or PICS background check, or perhaps you get put into a delayed status... do they just let you leave, or do they pull your current license, at least temporarily, until any issues are resolved? And, what happens then to your checked handgun? Are they going to let a possible felon retrieve their handgun?
All sorts of unexpected issues with NICS or PICS can pop up that might take time to resolve, so perhaps you are being warned that bringing your handgun along when renewing can have unintended consequences.IANAL. I don't give legal advice. I'm only stating my OPINION.
(Did I really need to say that on an Internet forum? LOL)

Re: Got my renewal notice with a strange instruction
My last renewal I carried and checked in my firearm. One thing I didn't like was the locker location, they asked me to leave firearm loaded and place in locker, which made muzzle point toward the people at metal detector area. Those lockers are just thin sheet metal, which sucks if someone were to have a accidental discharge.
