Carbon cleaning
The most frustrating chore of pistol shooting is trying to clean the barrels of the carbon deposits. What cleaning solutions have you found to be the easiest and most effective?

Re: Carbon cleaning
Personal favorite has been a homemade solution called Ed's Red. "This cleaner has an action very similar to standard military issue rifle
bore cleaner, such as Mil-C-372B"
http://handloads.com/articles/default.asp?id=9
CONTENTS: Ed's Red Bore Cleaner
1 part Dexron II, IIe or III ATF, GM Spec. D-20265 or later.
1 part Kerosene - deodorized, K1
1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits, Fed. Spec. TT-T-2981F, CAS
#64741-49-9, or may substitute "Stoddard Solvent", CAS #8052-41-3, or
equivalent, (aka "Varsol")
1 part Acetone, CAS #67-64-1.
(Optional up to 1 lb. of Lanolin, Anhydrous, USP per gallon, OK to
substitute Lanolin, Modified, Topical Lubricant, from the drug store)
I omit the acetone, and as the article states it's not as aggressive but still works well.
Edit: see they've made a commercial version of it. http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleanin...prod19936.aspxLast edited by cephas; June 3rd, 2016 at 02:17 PM.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Re: Carbon cleaning
I forget which cloth I bought but it's like this. Amazing how quickly and easily it works. Every revolver owner should have one.

If you ask 5 different shooters this, you will get at least 12 different answers

Re: Carbon cleaning
Havent had carbon deposits that don't wipe out since I started using Mobil 1 5w-30 as gun oil. Seriously. I use that shit on everything.
And previous to that I second Ed's Red.www.Steelvalleycasting.com is your new home for coated bullets and custom ammo.

Re: Carbon cleaning
A quart of hot water 2 caps of Simple Green concentration and 4 passes through the ultrasonic on the heat setting. Once dried I hit it with CLP or Hoppes and run a few patches through it wuntil it wipes clean.
Done.

Re: Carbon cleaning
Spray it on, let it drip off and dry.

My barrels are never an issue. But I spray it in the frame and trigger group of my semis from time to time.
Just be sure to use it outdoors and away from flames.
