At close range, align the front sight over the rear, don't bother trying to get a good sight picture. Your point of impact will change a couple inches at worst, probably less inside your house.
Actually your field of view is greatly reduced with your cheek down on the butt trying to align the sights.
I don't know, I gotta go with most militarys around the world and most law enforcement agencies on this one, a lighted optic beats irons in most situations. I guess one could look at it two ways, mount an optic and have backup irons, or have irons and a backup optic.

one thing I did not consider.

Both my M4gery and wife's have the standard front sight........

the vortex 1-4 looks like its going to be a PITA.

So back to the drawing board. Or my arms room with a hammer and pin punches. And to Rock River for a new gas block that will work with the Barret hand guards I have on mine and my wife's rifles.

Installing a free float hand guard is going to be such fun.

    Not.

There are mounts that will put the scope above the sights, or actually 1/3 cowitness I think, so the front one won't interfere with the reticle.
Anyway, if it's magnification you want, you can't go wrong with Vortex.

If you are interested in magnification and being able to use your iron sights, I had a Burris 332 mounted on a NCStar QD riser that was a pretty decent combination. The Burris has a see through base which when raised up by the riser allows you to use your irons through the Burris base. It's not an ideal mount for the scope but it does allow instant use of the irons.

So now its time to replace it. But I am getting lost in selecting a new sight.

I have about $500 to play with, and these are the usage paramaters:

    1. Home defense, limited target use to 300 meters.

    2. eyesight is borderline suckage. no glasses no see and I am currently wearing bifocals.

    3. Would like some kind of light and or magnification.

So please fire away with your suggestions

    Thanks

Aimpoint with a 3x or 4x qd flip to side magnifier.

Running a 1-4 on an AR with an FSB is not bad. On mine the cross hair center is above the sight post on low power, on 3-4 the post disappears from scope view.

Same. A bunch of folks, ok 4 people, shot it over the weekend and no one commented on being bothered by the FSB. One of the shooters even ordered one today. I was already used to it because my Eotech was 1/3 co witnessed and the view through the Vortex on 1x is pretty similar.

Well I kinda sorta compromised on this.

I got the Vortex 1-4 and the mounts from Vortex.

And I got the Aimpoint PRO.

I have a build I am finishing, so it will need a scope. If the Vortex does not work for me then off to the other AR that I am building as a DMR rifle. If it does then the Aimpoint will go on my wife's AR and her Bushnell dot will go in the spares box.

Will post pictures and test results.

Thank you all for the advise.
    gotta love her ;)
