Default Looking for a reputable range to learn safety and how to shoot.

    Hi,
I'm Planning on buying my first handgun within the next couple of month. Since I've never so much have held a gun let alone shot one. I think it would be irresponsible and idiotic not to get safety training and a few lessons (are there ranges that give lessons?). I live in the south hills area of Pittsburgh and am looking for a range where I can get safety training and lessons, a place with a good reputation. Although i don't yet own a gun, it's very important to me to be as safe as humanly possible. There's video after video on you tube of people's guns going off when they're loading them, or pulling back on the slider, and basically I don't want to be one of those guys. So if anyone that reads this knows of a good range that offers the things I want, in or close to Pittsburgh please let me know.
    Thanks,
    -P

    Welcome to the forum!
Thanks for noting your general location - that will help to get you suggestions that will be useful to you based on location.

I don't know any South Hills specific training outfits, but Fire Institute may be an option.
They offer all sorts of classes including "beginner". I attended one several years ago and found it helpful even though I was already fairly familiar with shooting.

If you are willing to make the 1 hour or so drive to youngwood. There is a place on 119. A&S indoor pistol range. You can get a private lesson from a instructor there. I don't remember how much. Go to the website and look it up. Very great place. I enjoy going to that place. It's worth the 40 minute drive to me where I am.

I also live in the South Hills area, and will second the recomendation to drive out to A&S, great range and they do offer training classes.

I think a NRA Basic Pistol course could serve you. It's a 2 part course. The first part is on-line ($60) and the second part is class room with a certified instructor.

Here's another option in Pittsburgh: http://pittsburghgunsafety.com/upcoming-classes/ I have no first or second hand knowledge regarding this guy or this course.

I'm really hoping that is an inert dummy training gun and not a real firearm in the instructor's hands.

PMSC should be bringing back their training courses in a few months. Basic Pistol NRA classes are still on the calendar. So maybe I am wrong about there not being club sponsored training at PMSC right now. They where about half the cost of A&S.

Yea A&S is expensive with just about everything. Even there handguns are a little pricey compared to others. But yes in the picture it is a blue dummy gun. I can see it on my screen at least. But not that I wouldn't past any body doing other wise.

    Third the A&S recommendation.
