Regardless of some vague law that I'm sure people are cited for daily, my point is that a security guard was wandering around opening up cars for what reason?
What if the owner had a dog in there and it attacked the guard?

IMO, the security guard was just being nosy and unless he has powers of arrest and to cite drivers the law about idling cars is moot.

But I'm also wondering why a security guard feels the need to open up peoples vehicles to "check on the circumstances"?

To the OP if he is still around, if walking a half mile is going to wear you out for the day and cause you to lose your job, I'd suggest letting the kid ride a bus or moving?
I am glad to see that this forum is still alive. My kid does ride the bus. Just like the parent in the Patton Middle School in Chester County, there are "emergencies" where I have to drop off/ pick up my child and most of the time I am carrying. So the dilemma is what to do when this happens and not break the law.

It sounded like it was a daily thing, sorry, I read that into your post.
    My mistake.
