Glad to see your ordeal end without massive destruction (even though that greatly reduced the fun factor).

I was aware that true locksmiths are getting hard to find and many in the Yellow Pages are just call centers, but I am glad you reinforced that. It is scary to realize how insecure our security is sometimes, the only good thing is that crooks as good as the locksmith are also getting more rare. We should all acknowledge that little we do will stop a real pro, uncommon as those may be.

Good luck in replacing the lock with a new (mechanical or dual?) one.

Thanks for the pictures and end of the story. So glad you didn't have to destroy the safe. Can you block the hole with hardened steel or is it better to leave it alone? I guess if someone wants in they are going to get in. Good he restored the fire protection.

Should anybody in SEPA need the services of a skilled and professional locksmith, you won't be disappointed. He measured several times to ensure he had the exact spot before drilling. He also laid out drop cloths to collect all of the metal shavings and drywall dust. And as a bonus, he is a gun-toting 2A supporter.

The only way the hole should compromise the safe is if the exact same lock is used as a replacement, and the person trying to get in knows to remove the keypad and drill out the hole that has filler. A different type of lock will likely have drill spots(s) in a slightly different location, which will require a new hole to be drilled. So as long as I buy a different brand/style locking set, I would think it should be as secure as it was prior to the hole being drilled.

I considered getting an exact replacement part so if it dies again I could possibly drill it myself using the same hole. Just an idea.

He gave me a small metal plaque with adhesive on the back that is basically like a business card. You could put it on the side of your safe for future reference.

It was a putty consistency that he kneaded for about a minute, but I didn't get more than that. He said it was fire resistant and absorbed paint well. It could have been JB Weld for all I know. I just Googled JB Weld and they do make a High Heat formula, so maybe that is actually what he used.

I've used it a lot around here for fixing various things. Works great and can be sanded and painted.
