    Default Carnegie Mellon area??

My son may be going to Carnegie Mellon in the fall and I was looking for a local's opinion of the area around CMU. Is it safe? I was there last year and drove around a bit and it seemed fine but I've been hearing about an increase in crime in Pittsburgh. Are the bad areas far enough away that there won't be any spillover? Also, he is supposed to fly there by himself and take a public bus from the airport to CMU. Are the buses safe? We were in Atlanta looking at Georgia Tech and I was told the MARTA was unsafe at all times. He is not very worldly and I'm a little concerned .
    thx

Yes, the buses and the neighborhoods around the school are fine.

I think the OP is saying his son may not have those skills yet. Maybe someone who lives out there can pick the kid up at the airport.

The area is OKAY. Not great past like 11 or midnight. Wouldn't want to give the wrong group of people the wrong look. He minds his own business he'll be okay. Trouble only happens when people put them Selves in it out there really. I've never ran into any issues.

I agree. Around campus and in the main areas of Oakland, you are as safe as in most cities. I spent many evenings in Oakland until 2 or 3 in the morning in bars, parties and eating at the "O" without any problems. Just keep your head on a swivel and walk around with a buddy or two if possible when it is late.

The really sketchy neighborhoods he would have to physically want to go to, I don't see how he could wander into them by accident.

Lots of Pittsburgh kids go to CMU, so I'd suggest he talk to some of the locals about what areas to avoid. Congrats on him getting into CMU.

The kid has to learn. If a bus to Oakland is too much for him, you might as well bubble-wrap him and keep him in the basement.

I assume he's staying on campus?

CMU is up on the better end of Oakland, near Shady Side, Squirrel Hill, and Schenley Park. All pretty safe (some very yuppie areas up there). It's the other end, near the Hill that can get a bit sketchy. Overall, if he stays on campus, or down in the Pitt campus area along 5th and Forbs, he'll be just fine.

Like others said, stay with groups of friends, stay away from parties in sketchy areas, and keep his hands to himself, and he'll be fine.

Btw, CMU is a great school, and tough to get into. Congrats.

I went to school in Oakland years ago, and things haven't changed much. The biggest danger wasn't crime, it was the stupid shit my friends and I did.
