mossberg 500 price
i've been looking at reliable 12 ga for home defense
i think i have narrowed it down to the mossberg 500... good reviews... cheap..
what is the difference between the express and the other version
i walked into a shop today and saw the tactical 500 marked about $450
that shop is usually marked too high so i didn't spend much time in it...
and i would get more honest opinions from you guys...
so back to my original question- should i go for the express? and how much is a decent price?
thanks in advance

Re: mossberg 500 price
I'm not fimilliar with the "express" but when I bought mine they had some with long barells and interchangable chokes and some with shorter barells and cylinder bore.
I don't know if that's the difference.
Do you want it for home defense? Or are you planning on huntine or shooting clay with it?
If your using it for clay or hunting you want interchangable chokes.

Re: mossberg 500 price
$450 is way too much for a Mossy 500 if home defense is it's purpose in life. You can buy a new 500 J.I.C. (Just In Case) 12 gauge with a pistol grip and 18" barrel for $300 which is, IMHO, the perfect HD shotgun. If you also want it for hunting or clays you'd want a full stock and longer barrel, but I still think you could get a new 500 for less than $450. IIRC, the Express carries a higher price tag because it can shoot magnum loads, but that would be overkill (pun intended) for HD. I think the only benefit you get from a magnum load is for heartier small game, like turkey and geese, where you'd still use game shot (vs slugs), but have more penetration power.

Re: mossberg 500 price
I've seen the pistol gripped versions with the full length military or police style magazines being sold at local gunshows for about $299.00.

Re: mossberg 500 price
Everytime I've noticed one the 500's at the gun shows it's bee around $299-350 for pistol grip ect.. I was at a shop today and roughly the same shot gun was $450... Gun shows are the best bet for something like this I'd think...

Re: mossberg 500 price
Go to King Shooter Supply in King of Prussia (aka www.betterbullets.com ) and ask for Roger. I went in looking for a Mossberg 500 J.I.C . He said he didn't have any in stock, and then looked in his dealer catalogue and without knowing me from Adam, said he'd get me one for $300. I put down a deposit on the spot because I knew Mossberg says MSRP is $400. I figured he must have ordered two when he ordered mine, because at the next Valley Forge Gun Show he had another just like it also selling for $300.

Re: mossberg 500 price
so you would recommend the Mossy J.I.C. for home defense?
would it be hard to learn to shoot without the stalk?

Re: mossberg 500 price
Is there really a "Mossberg 500 Express"? I've never heard of it... are you sure you aren't getting the Mossberg 500's and the Remington 870 Express mixed up?
Also, I've never heard anyone say you can't shoot magnums in any modern Mossberg.

Re: mossberg 500 price
Most definitely, I added a tactical lite with pressure switch to keep both hands on the gun, and keep it loaded with buckshot, so even with no time to take aim, a shot from the hip just has to be close.
I didn't think so, in fact I find it a lot more fun going through a mag "Terminator style" than pulling a stock up to the shoulder. I've only pulled up to use the bead site a couple times, but I do most of my practicing from the hip. All the recoil is felt in the web area of the thumb, so it's not for everyone, but I use shooting gloves at the range so with a good grip it doesn't bother me. Also, I wouldn't say the recoil is any worse than my .44 mag which hits the same spot. I always have it with me shooting, so no matter what other guns I'm practicing with for the day, the Mossy JIC comes out to play for at least a few rounds because it's just so impressive to see the damage it does.
I bought mine for HD and to keep by my side while at my camp out in the wilds without ever shooting one, but if the pistol grip style gives you pause, I'd suggest trying before buying. You are a straight white man. You don't get to be the victim, sweetie.
