Talking OC encounter at Shop Rite

I was picking up some dinner to eat at the local Shop Rite in their little food court section. Today I OCed a Ruger GP100 in a brown leather thumb break.

A man in his early 50's, wearing a beret-type hat and a trimmed beard, engages me:

    Beret: Is that real?
    Me: Yes (I smile).
Beret: Do you need a permit to carry that?
Me: Yes, generally you do, either CC or OC (it was a long day and I wasn't in the spirit of making my usual speech).
Beret: Why do you feel the need to carry that?
Me: Defend myself and my family: self defense.
Beret: Do you really feel the need to carry that?
    Me: (smiling) Yes.
Beret: But, you feel like you need to carry that?
    Me: Yes.
    Beret: Really? You need that?
Me: It's a great last-resort if I actually ever need it.
Beret: (nervously) Well I hope it's a last resort.

I honestly didn't feel like giving any speeches today, my family was hungry for dinner, and I just smiled and said 'Yes'. I think it caught him off guard, that I just answered with 'Yes' and smiled---he seemed to expect some debate or something.

It's really been a long time since someone engaged me about OC. Just thought I'd share.

Well at least Mr.Raspberry Beret did not run off and hunt down a manager to whine to....what did you select for yourself for supper?

Maybe he was concerned you had a brown leather holster and a black belt? Wearing a beret, he very well may have been the fashion police.

What's with food and guns? I was grabbing lunch with my wife, son and his GF. A man walks up and excused himself to me. " I just want to tell you that I feel safer with you having a firearm here." I said thank you to him and he turned to go back to his table. I had decided to carry my Star Model B Super yesterday.

OK, so where on the planet Earth was this? Considering you don't give any hint of your location in your profile or where this occurred in your story.

    I'm assuming planet Earth.

I would have asked him why he feels to wear a beret in 2016? Then follow it up with you really wear that every day?

Yes, I was wearing a black belt with a brown holster. And, I had a OD green pouch for speed strips. Perhaps he was aghast at my fashion faux pas.

Dinner was sushi. Believe it or not, they do pretty good sushi there.

I'm at that shop-rite almost 4 times per week, always OCing a big pistol of some sort. I'm sure there have been complaints to the managers (just sheer probability would dictate that), and I've concluded that management there doesn't mind my OCing business there.

Perhaps this beret-man was from a nearby nanny state; he did start off by asking me if the .357 magnum WAS REAL.
