It's been a while for any additional work at my buddy's camp.

Roof shingles were blowing off, interior ceiling joists were getting wet and rotting.
I told him I am too old to do a metal roof.
He contracted a Menonite construction co. and they did the entire roof, replaced wood as needed and installed some under house supports for a small addition. The addition had an outside door that only worked when the frost raised the floor.

He had a freeze on the water line last year. I think the heat trace switch was inadvertantly flipped to off and there was a low spot in the outside pex tube.

We had talked about reworking the water valve shut off pit since early on.

I finally had a few days to spare and am up here now.
I removed all the old collapsing block and brick

I dug about 7 inches below the PVC water service pipe.

    2019-10-14_06-49-10 by poofy27, on Flickr

Then installed a new base concrete slab.

I then took the 4 foot piece of 20 inch PVC I got from a sewer contractor when I was fishing and cut it to length and slotted the water inlet pipe.

The 20 inch shell will be the pit.
I cut a piece of 3/4"plywood to fit into the pipe and another piece to act as a cap or lid.

One piece will be a lower retainer and the cap or lid will sandwich 2" styrofoam in layers.

I have yet to cut a 3 1/2" hole for the pex going to the house.
I will install a 3" PVC sleeve to house the 3/4" heat traced and insulated pex.

Laying on my belly and digging with a margin trowel was a bitch.

    Gentlemen
    Thanks for the birthday wishes.
The camp is a relaxing place to spend time. I'm listening to Brookvilles megarock station drinking a few MGDs.

The work is not really like work.
Figuring out how to do things and doing it keeps my mind going.

My wife thinks I should get a place up here or property. She said I need a project.
Probly just wants me out of her hair for days at a time. Ha.

The 14 point nontypical I got a few weeks ago means I'll be the shanty bitch when we come up for rifle season.

Maybe I'll dig up the lid of the septic and install a clean out to grade or get a furtakers license and hunt for a mountain lion or yote.

    Back at it again today.

Here's a pic of his new roof.
    2019-10-15_06-21-50 by poofy27, on Flickr

First thing, I had to sawcut the concrete to get the radius of the pipe into the hole.

    2019-10-15_06-21-23 by poofy27, on Flickr

The pipe is an inch thick and pretty heavy so had to rig it with a rope to lower it.
    2019-10-15_06-21-38 by poofy27, on Flickr

Piping the PVC was a screw up on my part and I paid for it in time.
A 3" conduit long sweep ell was a bit expensive so I opted for 2 drainage 45's.

I used 3/4" PEX, heat traced it and insulated it.
I put a pull rope through the pipe, tied it to the pex, electrical taped it to make as round an end as i could so it would slide right through.
My bad. It took 2 hours to work it through the 2 fittings. I'm a dumbass. Probly should have used 4" or sprung for the conduit ell.

    2019-10-15_06-22-49 by poofy27, on Flickr

I connected both ends. Then placed 3 bricks on end to support the bottom section (plywood) for styrofoam insulation circles that will attach to the plywood and have a handle for removal.

I had a handle from some hospital job and finally used it for the lid.

So, to complete this project, I need to secure the pit heat trace to the sidewall.
I need 7 20 inch circle cut pieces of 2" styrofoam. There will be 2 sections of styrofoam due to the limit of clearance between the pit and the structure.

The pit around the pipe needs to be backfilled. A few inches of limestone chips, plastic and dirt.
Concrete work is something he can do if he wants.

A weather strip on the lid should seal any possible cold air infiltration.

Having a Miller right now. It's like admiration time.
An old foreman 40 years ago used to send me to the bar for a couple six packs on Friday afternoons.

He was a firm believer in Admiration Time.
