    Question Remington 1100 Barrel/choke question

I came across a Remington 1100 shotgun a while back. It came with an extra barrel. Someone has shortened the barrel to about 20 inches in length. It does have a choke installed. My question is : Is it ok to use this shortened barrel? Will the gun function properly. Also I've tried to unscrew the choke (just cause )and it is tight. How do I tell what pattern this choke is and any suggestions on how to remove the choke? Thanks. Alan

as for if it is safe, if you don't trust it take it to a gun smith and let him check it out. back in the early 70's they weren't screwed in they were sweated in.

Get a choke gauge, or go to a patterning board. Not all barrels had removeable chokes...especially older models. Older barrels were made choked and one changed the whole barrel if they wanted a different choke pattern. Easy enough to do. If I looks like there is no way to remove the choke...it was made that way. It's marked on the barrel.

Most removable chokes have notches in them corresponding to a certain choke size. For example, three notches is a "Number 3" which is almost always a modified choke. This is a general rule. Most manufacturers abide by this. There are exceptions.
    1 notch = Full
    2 notches = Improved modified
    3 notches = Modified
    4 notches = Improved cylinder
    5 notches = Cylinder
