Thumbs-Up: Berks LTCF Process
Once again, I'd like to comment on my satisfaction with Sheriff Weaknecht and the positive changes he's made to the LTCF permitting process in Berks county since taking office in 2008. Roving permit unit, a permanent substation at the airport so if you're close to Reading you don't have to go to the courthouse, and on-the-spot issuance if your application is in order and the background check is passed.
I was due for renewal, and went over to the airport substation office... in and out with a renewed permit in 15 minutes.

Yup, Sheriff Weaknecht rules. He's very quick to sign NFA forms as well.

Yep, big thumbs up for him. He speaks about firearms at small local events like the Tea Party. Also gives seminars at Cabelas occasionally. I believe on the NRA weekends.

I always recommend using the airport location for renewals if someone asks. I don't know anything about the Kutztown one but imagine it is also good.

I'm from Berks originally.
When I moved to Montco, I just expected the rest of the state to be like Berks was... so it really pissed me off when I was told to beg my local PD or wait a bunch of days.
If Berks can do it, they all can do it... they just choose not to for political reasons.

Re: Thumbs-Up: Berks LTCF Process
Didn't realize, that's good to know.
Never been to Kutztown, but I did my previous renewal at the roving unit station in Colebrookdale. Other than PICS having to be phoned in that night and making the line a bit longer, there were no issues.
Couldn't agree more. That police check card crap is infuriating. The whole reason LTCFs go through the Sheriff is because they are an arm of the Judiciary, so it prevents the Executive Branch from trying to affect the process of exercising a right. And, Sheriffs that abuse their authority in this matter can be removed from office or not reelected; there's nothing you can do about a PD Chief.
Sheriffs dept's that defer their applicant research work to a local PD, where the applicant now has to get approval from an agent of the Executive who isn't beholden to voters, violate the spirit and intent of the process. And quite franky, it's just plain lazy on the part of the Sheriff to make the PDs do their work for them."Political Correctness is just tyranny with manners"
