It has been said there are 175k to 185k transferable machine guns out there so I wonder if this number takes in account pre and post samples as well?

Those are deff a TOTAL number...private owned, dealers, PD, pre/post samples.
There is no way there are that many privately owned DDs in Pennsylvania when we can't even own a high explosive DD.
