I had forgotten what a wonderfull design the 1911 is.
When I stopped by a LGS this afternoon I picked up a Rock Island M1911A1 super cheap.
Even 30 yr post Lejeune I could remember how to break it down. I'd forgotten what an elegantly simple and functional design it is. A timeless classic.

I had a newfound respect for Brownings design genius when I found out the design is entirely tool-less. (Or more specifically, uses its own parts as tools for disassembly).

I used a 1911 in the Marines in '66-70 & when I bought my first one over 40 years later, even the detail strip came back to me like it was yesterday. The same happened when I bought my first CMP Garand, because we carried them in ITR at Lejeune.
I bet if I could get ahold of a M60 it would be the same. (I sure did like that damn "pig.")"It's hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong."

Every once in awhile I have to get her out of the safe and remind myself what an all steal beauty feels like.
These days it sees more cleaning and oiling then Shooting as compared to her polymer cousins but that just makes it more fun when we do get outside on the range.

I'm lovin' them, and I don't even have any of the real high priced ones.

Think about it... how many other pistols can 99.98% of owners totally strip down like you can the 1911?? It's just a timeless design!

Re: I had forgotten what a wonderfull design the 1911 is.
I do love the 1911. Not all the 1911's I've owned worked right. But, the ones that do work well, they are just a great design. For me, the ergonomics are the most attractive aspect of the 1911. No other pistol, auto or revolver, feels as secure and perfect in my hand than the 1911. Add an aggressive front strap stippling, and that gun is LOCKED into my hand with the thumb riding the safety. The big heavy slugs that come out the business end really make this THE combat pistol.
