Default 270 to 338 win. magnum

I picked up a Ted Williams model 53 in 270 for a really good price.I already have a 270 and a 30-06 so I don't really need another one. I do want a 338 win. magnum so what is involved in converting this one? Is it just a simple rebarrelling job or does the bolt face need opened up and the mag box tweaked? Also is there anyone local to me in the Harrisburg/ Carlisle area that can do this kind of work?

Ted Williams 53...that is the old Sears house brand for a Winchester Model 70.

The cartridge length (long action .270) should be ok for conversion but the .338 base is a bit bigger (.513) than .270 (.470) so it would likely need some bolt work.

I do not have a current list of GOOD rifle smiths that could really help you, hopefully somebody here knows one.

    Good luck!

A much simpler conversion would be to .35 Whelen.

Great point! .30-06 is the cartridge it is based off of.

It's all about how much money he wants to spend on this project.

Yep, agree with Ian, good point. If you're really into it another one would be a .338/06. Definitely a handloaders proposition though.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

I found this over at 6mmBR.com.....I respect his opinion, great info over there. From his list of recommended gunsmiths, there are a few more from PA, this one jumped out because of his comment.

Maybe this guy can look into this job. Remember though with a good in demand 'smith, there won't be a fast turn around.

Well I decided to go ahead with this project. I contacted Chad McCauslin of McCauslin's Rifles in Carlisle. He told me if I get the barrel he will put t together ,headspace it , open up the bolt face , and make it feed like a hot knife thru melted butter (his words) for $150. I bought a barrel on ebay (waiting on it to get delivered) for $93 plus $15 shipping. The best part is its a supergrade takeoff barrel. Eventually I would like to find a nice walnut monte carlo takeoff stock or maybe settle for a nice Boyds stock. And I would like to upgrade the scope. For now I just want to get itput together and do the rest as I can. It will be getting a recoil pad added in the immediate future as it has a steel buttplate on it now. I am not recoil shy at all, but I'm thinking a 338 magnum and a steel buttplate may be a little more "lively" than I care to endure. If you all would like I will take pics of it as I go. Gotta get the rifle aaout of layaway and the barrel is supposed to be delivered on the 13th.
