Krylon paint removal
I traded into an AR with a decent camo paint job, but now I want to strip it back to original finish. I've called krylon, but received very vague answers about how to strip it. My searching for ideas has come up with some pretty toxic chemicals that would probably work. I've used these, e.g. Strip EZ, and it's nasty stuff. I don't want to damage the anodizing, and I don't want to deal with lots of rubber gloves and chemical burns unless it's my only choice.
Is a heat gun safe to use on the aluminum parts of my receiver?
Any other possibilities I should consider?

Re: Krylon paint removal
Carb cleaner. Try not to get it on your skin or inhale it. Try a test spot first, but it should soften the paint enough to rub off.

Re: Krylon paint removal
The paint has "tooth" in the form of all those irregularities in the metal (machine tool marks, bead blasted areas, engraved/embossed areas and such) and will require being dissolved by solvent. It depends on your living style. If in an apartment, you are limited. I, on the other hand, have a garage and a rough side of the garage where solvents can evaporate into the air and contribute to global cooling/warming/climate change, destruction of the ozone layer and other benefits. Acetone should do it. I don't see a solvent damaging anodizing. That would take an etching action from a caustic or acidic solution. "Toxic" chemicals in today's alarmists world have served me well for almost 80 years. How damned long do you want to live, anyway?

Never tried Citristrip on paint, but it works wonders on stain. It won't hurt anything and just might work.
They make it in jug or can form. I'd go with the spray on this job. $8, just try a test spot and if it doesn't work, you will use it on something else someday. My second recommendation would be Aircraft Stripper.
Someone online stripped a whole bicycle with it and it won't hurt you or the gun.

Aircraft costs more.

Yep , acetone. Won't harm aluminum , won't strip anodizing , won't corrode.

Citristrip is the best I've used. Get the Gel and paint it on with a brush.

Re: Krylon paint removal
Brake cleaner will soften/remove standard paint with no problem. However, be careful around any plastic/polymer parts and I use the non-chlorinated as to not fade anything it gets on. It will not hurt the anodizing on lowers and uppers.
