+1 for Trail Boss. It is so voluminous(?) you can literally fill the cases with it and be right at subsonic velocities, with no worries of over-pressure or squibs. You are going to get velocities of around 1050 fps with the cases just about topped off. I would have to look at my data but the cool part about trail boss is, 7.5 grains takes up the same volume as 50 grains of some other powders. There is a ton of good info online about trailboss in subsonic 308 loads. Good luck with it.

trailboss in a 308 case only fills up abt 1/3 of the case so I use a little fluff of Dacron fill to hold it against the primer and eliminate a chance of flashover

If you follow the instructions on Hodgdon's website, Trailboss charge weight is related to volume. Optimum performance is achieved when the case is 70%-100% full.

If your case is only 1/3 full, you are doing something wrong...

Years ago I acquired a .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor. A Springfield guy in Bucks County who really knew his stuff set me up with a smokeless powder load (forget what it is) but it required Dacron to keep it back near the primer. Works like a charm. Another thing to do is hold the rifle muzzle up and slap the stock to get the powder back to the primer area, then lower it for firing.

As others have said do not use rifle powders in this application period! Respectfully sir if I were you I would not use jacketed bullets to you get a better grasp on loading sub or lower vel rounds for your rifle . Your better off finding/buying some already cast 30 cal bullets in the 180-200 gr range already sized to .310 dia and loading them with 4-6 gr of bullseye pistol powder I have loaded prob close to 1k of these type of loads for my 30-06 without issue of any kind , there's no need for any Dacron fluff or filler to position the powder I've try it and accuracy is the same without it . Besides being less cost a well loaded cast bullet can be every bit as accurate as a jacketed especially in this application .

In the Lyman Ar reloading handbook you will find in the 308 area sub loads for 220gr bullet. Rx7

My friends at Wright Pat weapons testing division tell me Winchester uses something that looks like pic and pull foam from pelican cases. It's already cut in squares and I have had a lot of luck with it.
