Default Grail Gun for Smith and Wesson Collectors

Local gun store find! Just picked up a Model 696. "No dash and no lock" model.

They were made between 1996 and 2001 in 44 Special, I've heard about them but never saw one. 44SPL is a hand loaders delight, I wouldn't want to buy ammo for it.

Tight shooter and a nice packing piece. Bummer that there was no box but can't be too fussy.

Very nice. I went through a huge 44 Special phase when I was stationed in Germany. Shot 'em all thru a Model 29 that I bought at Mainz-Finthen's Rod & Gun Club. Foolishly sold that Model 29. I would gladly have this revolver you just picked up!

    Best regards,

    Ray

Interesting gun thanks for showing it. I like the less common/rare revolvers also. Did someone trade it in to the LGS or was it on consignment? Do you feel you got a great, good or fair deal on the gun. Congrats on your new Smith.

Nice revolver for sure. I'm still looking for a registered magnum being sold as a 27.

Congrats! I have few S&W revolvers anymore, but my 696 will be the last to go.

Is yours a "no dash" or "-1"?

Don't "magnumize" the loads; the forcing cone is pretty thin, and there have been a few reports of 696s with cracked forcing cones.

I bought one when Edelman's on 309 was closing. Kinda big and bulky for a 5-shot. A 3in Mod.65 carried better and was a 6-shot .357. Sold it a few years later for double what I paid.

    It is a no-dash.

Yes, I backed off on my 240 LSWC over 7.5 grains of Unique to 6.0. No need to beat the revolver up just to punch paper.

It was a LGS trade in. I thought $750 was a fair price. I am sure that if I ever need to get my money out of it in the future I probably can.
