What's your opinion on semi-auto rifle hunting?
Just as the title says, what do you think about it? In my opinion, semi-auto rifle hunting is completely unnecessary while using a caliber larger than .22. You already hear people out in the woods firing off 4-5 rounds at a deer. What does everyone else think about this?

Re: What's your opinion on semi-auto rifle hunting?
From time to time I hear about guys that use semi auto 308's and 30-06's in different states, I think there's something wrong with that. Small game semi rifles I have no problem with, it's the larger caliber ones that rub me the wrong way.

Re: What's your opinion on semi-auto rifle hunting?
Sorry dude, but I have a feeling that you're going to find VERY FEW who agree with you on this one here at PAFOA - myself included.
It's long overdue. PA is the only state in the country where you CAN'T hunt with a semi-auto rifle.
The "it's a gun for war" argument is invalid. EVERY firearm that was worth anything was, at one time, used as a gun for war - flint lock, lever action, bolt action, and now semi-auto.
The biggest thing that it would do is take the "why do you need it if you can't hunt with it" card out of the anti-gun crowd's hand.
You already hear people out in the woods firing off 4-5 rounds at a deer.
Scenario #1:
- Press the trigger
- Recover from recoil
- Break cheek weld and dismount the rifle
- Cycle rifle
- Remount the rifle
- Reacquire sights or scope picture
- Recenter the sights or the scope on the target
- Press the trigger
(and trying to do all of the above under 2 seconds while under stress - buck fever, adrenaline rush, call it what you will)
Scenario #2:
- Press the trigger
- Recover from recoil while maintaining cheek weld and sight alignment or scope picture
- Recenter the sights or the scope on the target
- Press the trigger
Then there is the issue of WHY people need 4-5 shots to anchor a deer. If they were allowed to hunt with the gun that they spend the most trigger time with, maybe they wouldn't need so many shots.Soap Box - Worn out : Ballot Box - Broken : Jury Box - Pending : Ammunition Box - Unknown

Re: What's your opinion on semi-auto rifle hunting?
This has already been discussed multiple times in the thread that is tracking the bill to legalize the use of semi auto rifles.
I live in an area with hunters all around me and acres and acres of private land that is hunted and I Never hear shot after shot fired during any season.
Lastly your opinion is your opinion you have a right to it but not a right to the facts and the facts show no difference in the way hunters shoot and take game or reported injuries in the other 48 states where it's completely legal.

He is entitled to his opinion. It is our job to tell him that he is wrong AND explain why his opinion is not based on facts, but rather based on emotion. Hopefully he will see the error of his ways. If not, he will continue to be a FUDD and he will be ignored accordingly.Soap Box - Worn out : Ballot Box - Broken : Jury Box - Pending : Ammunition Box - Unknown

Re: What's your opinion on semi-auto rifle hunting?
I already knew the majority of you don't agree with me on this topic. Just wanted to hear some reasoning. Heres mine, I like the challenge when hunting deer. If you miss two times, you aren't going to hit it, from what I know personally and from talking to other fellow hunters. If you miss, then wait till next year, he might be a bruiser then. Theres no real reasoning behind blasting off 6-8 shots through a semi at an animal, thats not hunting. Hunting is a sport of skill and camaraderie, in my opinion, it is not a sport of lets fire off 10 shots in 10 seconds and pray I hit something. I understand that a good amount of you want to take your AR hunting and blast anything that moves, but that pisses off the old school guys who grew up with a one shot one kill mind set.
