Range of S&W 500 for hunting?
Anyone use a Smith and Wesson 500 to hunt deer or other critters? What has been your results with targets at 100 yards?

i would scope it for shots beyond 75 yrds.
no doubt that hot loads will cleanly kill out to 200 yards....with good hits.it's only metal, we can out think it....

Re: Range of S&W 500 for hunting?
I took a cow elk with my 500 at 75 yards; one shot kill....so I don't see a problem with 100 on white deer.
My 500 is scoped, from a solid rest it will hold 4.5 inch groups at 100 yardsThe oracle is in. Age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill!!

You will have more than enough power with a 500 at any reasonable distance. The effective range is the distance YOU can hit a pie plate constantly (9 times out of 10).
And I mean shooting under the same conditions you will be in the field. Don't go to a range and shoot off a bench at 100 and think your OK. Shoot it offhand, steadied by a tree, or sitting in a chair (like you would be in a treestand). The effective range for most people is 50-75 yards. If you can do better good for you.

If it is anything like the 460, 150 yards or more is no problem. My 460 will group 5 shots under 2" at 100 yards.

My Ruger Red Hawk 44 mag with a 7 1/2" barrel does great at 200 yrds. It likes hot loads with a 240gr HP.
I will fear no man or beast, because my 45 is on my side, at least!

Re: Range of S&W 500 for hunting?
From what I've read, the 460 has better down range ballistics. The 500 is "hotter' at the muzzle. I was actually researching these as I caught sight of the performance center version and I like the look of it. Am thinking of trading in my Ruger 44mag with the 7.5" barrel. The only time I take it out of the safe is whitetail season and that will probably remain true for the 460 XVR if I get it. I can't justify two hunting handguns in the safe, and like I said before, I'm really liking the look of the S&W PC 460 XVR. Still in the research mode and I may have to travel to a gun shop that rents the 460 and put a box of shells through it.

I have a 480 ruger superredhawk with 7.5 inch barrel. Can send my handloads into a 2" group at 75 yards.
