Default Military to sell as many as 100.000 M1911 and M1911A1 to civilians

As part of the National Defense Authorization Act now signed into law by Obama there looks like there will be a big M1911 sale in 2016.

Rounding out the list of pro-gun provisions is section 1087, which restores authorization to the Secretary of Defense to transfer to the Civilian Marksmanship Program surplus M1911 and M1911A1 .45 ACP pistols for sale to the public. The component of the CMP that dispenses the pistols would be required to obtain a federal firearms license and abide by all requirements of the Gun Control Act pertaining to licensed sales and transfers. Currently, the military has some 100,000 such pistols that it no longer needs and that are being stored as taxpayer expense. These historically-significant firearms can now be transferred to law-abiding owners at a net gain to the government’s heavily-indebted balance sheet.

I'd buy if the price was reasonable. Any service member I've ever talked to that had experience with them before the switch to the M9 is that they were loose and sloppy. Understandable given the age. Of course, I suppose it's also the luck of the draw. Some of my classmates received Security Six Rugers that were in really nice shape, mine looked like it had been dragged down the road behind a cruiser.

I even remember back in the day as an Army brat it was a talked about topic in regards to the 1911s and how beat to hell they were. It will be interesting to see what condition these are in and if the CMP will resell them as is or do a rebuild on them to a certain spec.

I'm surprised obama didn't fight this more and let this one slip through.

Most of the ones we had aboard my ship were not in the best of shape. Most required an overhaul. New springs, perhaps a barrel bushing. They were far from national match condition.

I was trained by a Marine Gunny on an issue 1911A1 as per my Senior Chief Uncle. I think they'll sell out pretty fast. I'm probably going to hold off buying one. I had a SA Mil Spec for years, it worked fine.

The 1911 is SAFE act approved, the M1 is an "assault rifle" in places like NJ.

    Fits the narrative just fine.

I'll buy one 'cause it's like a barbie doll for gunnies.
