I think I have an answer for you. Here is how smith and wessson handles it on the 627-5 N frame snubby. The ejector shroud is too short for the normal pin and spring. They use a ball and detent on the crane and bottom of the shroud. The ball sits on the left side of the v groove, always pushing the cylinder and crane home.
