Good job cleaning it up regardless. That cleanup might just help your friend get it serviced by Taurus. If he sent it in its previous condition, they'd probably mail it right back with a note saying "is this a joke?"

Then again he might wind up with the same piece of junk in a box with a note explaining it was mistreated and therefore not covered by warranty. At any rate I enjoyed cleaning it up and I'm glad I could do something for a friend. Thank you to all those who offered advice along the way, its truly appreciated.
That was nice to give your friend his gun back. Maybe they will help him out. If they don't take care of him and he gets the gun back as is, I would be willing to buy it for $100.00. If I couldn't get it fixed it would just become a wall hanger. But I have spent money on worse things!

After returning the gun to my friend I called Taurus manufacturing myself, waited on hold for almost an hour, and eventually got an RMA number. I told the owner that it's definitely worth the gamble of the shipping cost to send it in since they are willing to look at it. I even gave him a detailed list of parts with the corresponding stock numbers that I felt should be looked at or replaced to include in the box. I asked my friend one time, about three weeks after returning the revolver to him, if he ever got it mailed off and the answer was no. I never brought it up again and dont plan to. My guess is that its sitting in the same spot he first place it when he brought it home the day I gave it to him and that's where it will be for a while.

Wouldn't it be an interesting mix of customer service if Taurus rebuilt/refinished the revolver juxtaposed to phone contact waiting times of an hour.

You did a lot for your friend. His choosing to not pick up the ball has to be a bit disappointing. Sometimes one's enthusiasm can feel intrusive to one who does not feel the enthusiasm. I think letting it go is the right instinct to follow.

Wow, what does one have to do to get a gun to look like that? I don't baby my stuff but what happened there borders on criminal.

$100? Yeah, I'd roll the dice.

Edit/Addition: Neglecting to read the entire thread before posting I now see the issue of the frame crack. Sadly I have to agree with those who deem the poor thing dead. Beside the weird body position and closed eyes involved the first time the trigger is pulled there is the long term potential a weld didn't take as well as we'd hope. It may be stainless but what quality stainless? Impurities in the metal may cause future failures under the conditions of a .44 lighting off.

But kudos for the refinishing work. I'd let you date my daughter.

Reline the barrel and chambers to .22LR. Frame crack will be fine. (Drill the end of the crack to stop its progress)
