Agreed...it's never crossed my mind. I've been lucky to have no jams or feeding issues in any of my guns.

I don't rapid fire anyway, but now I know what to watch for.

It gets really bad in my wheelhouse. Some of us use caliber conversion gear for guns. Or make it ourselves. Extremely prevalent in the small full auto community.

But this can be a lesson to all. If you are trying to tune a gun or a system to work, and you are getting 100s of various kinds of malfunctions in a range session, it can be easy to get lazy and not check everything after every failure. Especially when you are getting failure to extract, which is what a squib often looks like.

Very easy to blow up a wheel gun, bolt, or lever. Shooting a semi, all the signs are there when you get a squib. It almost always requires you to do something stupid before blowing up your gun.

Best or worst depending story on squibs. I had a cowboy shooter bring a Ruger to me that had 5 squibs stuck in the barrel. He ended up selling it to me cheap rather than pay for removal or a new barrel.
When I asked him why so many he said that he thought he was missing the target. One nice thing about cleaning up behind our cowboy shooters is that they shoot POOF loads. The gun was not hurt in anyway so it worked out for me.

Squib rounds can most certainly ruin your day, but they can also make you look like a "guardian angel" if you remember to bring assorted sized squib rods (brass rounds, which don't scratch the barrel) AND a rubber mallet ($2-5 at a flea market) just to help out other folks with great hearing and a "WTF" expression on their faces when something sounds wrong.

For those who reload, I'm pretty sure we all have at least ONE squib rod. For the pistol size, I have three. You can buy them at selective shops that carry them (while I have a bad average here, I've only seen ONE shop that sells squib rods out of the last 7-8 I visited). The shop that had them sold them for around $20 - EACH.

Here's a link for where to order you squib rods:

    https://www.onlinemetals.com/merchan...p=2&top_cat=79

A 12" length is enough for a pistol:

Rod diameter .4375 (45 ACP and above)

    Rod diameter .3125 (.380, 9mm, .40)

    Rod diameter .25 (.32)

While I don't remember the exact price, I think I got 3 squib rods shipped for less than $20 from these folks. The rods I received were still sharp from where they were cut, so I spent about a minute on each end with 1,000 grit sandpaper just to take off the roughness and round the edges.

Before you even attempt to pound out a squib, take whatever spray lubricant you have and depending on what end of the barrel you're inserting the rod, lubricate it with whatever lube is available - you remembered to bring your "Kroil", "WD-40", etc., right? Let it penetrate for 5-10 minutes and then just bring out your squib rod and rubber mallet.

Shortly, the problem will be solved.

    Hope this helps.

Here's another bad Remington example. And a reminder to carefully inspect for external abnormalities.

    These are .45 ACP

Reminder not to buy Remington apparently...those are some horrible-looking rounds.
