    Default Ak 47 barrel threading

Anyone know of a gunsmith in the York area able to thread a barrel? I have an Saiga and I'd like to add a muzzle brake. Thanks!

It isn't made to have the barrel threaded, you need to put a threaded front sight base on it.

One of the members on AKFiles was lending his threading tools to the guys on the forum, just for this purpose. I had never threaded a barrel before and once the tools came my way, I threaded one barrel and checked the threads and made sure it was aligned.

I subsequently threaded the other two barrels. These were Chinese rifles and not much room to play with, but it was enough to thread.

47 rifles have threaded muzzles, while 74's have threaded FSB's. OP likely has a ban era or ban state 47 without threads. Though a threaded FSB can normally be added.

Easiest thing to do would be to install a 74 front sight base with 24mm threads since the factory saiga sight base is in the same position.
For 14mm threads you will need an akm front sight or trim the shroud off of your sight base and drill for detent pin, then repin farther toward the end of the barrel.

There was a batch of 7.62x39 saigas a few years back that had 14mm threads under the shroud, you might get lucky.

Current production russian 7.62x39 ak's (Ak-103) use a threaded front sight base, sagias use something similar but it isn't threaded

Forgive my prior post. Don't know how I missed that this was a Saiga

And you are correct, but I just assumed the OP was looking for the AKM look since he asked about barrel threading. I would personally go the threaded FSB route as you and others have suggested. Depends on what he wants though. And if he threads the barrel, the Saiga FSB has no detent pin anyway, correct?
