I generally avoid sitting with my back to the door whenever possible. I also avoid sitting in booths in restaurants because it's easier to draw sitting in a chair than it is sitting in a booth (at least for me).

I prefer facing forward because people watching has it's attractions. That it additionally serves to enhance awareness is beneficial and I use it as such. I find that at those times when my preference is unobtainable I am less comfortable in my surroundings.

But I do find myself considering options, such as exits and approaches, concealments and barriers. Not batshit crazy tactical planning....but enough to be ahead of the curve in any sort of event. Buildings catch fire, cars run into things, crazy people act crazy....a quick review of the area seems logical.

I initially had to be very intentional with watching my surroundings, doors, etc. Over time, this has become something I just do without much thinking about.

Because of my employment, I like to know who is around me so I am not surprised by anything. As such, I normally sit so I can "people watch", especially the busiest entrance(s). Fortunately, my wife is as aware as I am and sits across from me. Even if I wasn't watching the door, it would be covered by her. Has helped out in some situations, too.
