Re: My wife is getting her first handgun anyone have any suggestions?
...ah man, all I saw was "my wife is getting her first" and I had to check it out. This thread is just about handguns. bummer
I also agree with letting her feel up a few to see what she likes."The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of 'liberalism,' they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."

Re: My wife is getting her first handgun anyone have any suggestions?
Take her to the gun case, then simply walk 20 feet away and browse...
She'll pick the one she wants. Just remind her to ask questions and compare prices verses quality and reliability... Just because the .454 fits her hand good, doesn't mean it's going to be pleasant to shoot or easy on the pocket book... Try to stick with 9mm if you can because it's deadly but easy to shoot and moderatly affordable...

Re: My wife is getting her first handgun anyone have any suggestions?
The Charter .44 is very lite for a .44 special. I have one, and I would NOT recommend one for a shooter unless they enjoy recoil. If you do, try the cowboy loads, they are a bit less brisk.
If you want the Charter, try the .38, you can use lite loads for pratice, and step them up for defense.
I use WW .38sp 110 grain Silvertips (not +P) for my standard carry load in my S&W 442. Great gun BTW.

I agree with the.....let her shoot some to see what she likes best train of thought.
It is not always just the way a gun feels in the hand that tells you how you will like shooting it. She should like to shoot the gun so that she will practice with it.Koli's back from Ambler.

Re: My wife is getting her first handgun anyone have any suggestions?
When I first shot a revolver I was amazed at how difficult I found it to shoot consistently. The heaviness of the trigger was not as much of a problem for me as the length of the pull and the staging. Several times I had to adjust my grip to get that last fraction of an inch of trigger squeeze. I even managed to jam the thing once...perhaps I shouldn't admit this on a public forum but I somehow managed to do it. The cylinder would just not turn more than half way at one point. I'm not blaming the gun, but my faith in the conventional wisdom that the revolver makes an ideal first gun, or gun for people who don't shoot much, will never be the same. There is really no substitute for firing a gun to find out if you want to live with it.

Mrs. Plinker shot a whole bunch of guns before choosing a Smith and Wesson M&P 9c. And that is a different answer than just about anyone else has posted so far. So the answer to the question of what gun is whatever gun she wants!

Depends on how much she wants to spend
My recommendation depends on the intended use
Glock Pistols.......So simple a Caveman could fix them!

Re: My wife is getting her first handgun anyone have any suggestions?
used K frame(perferably Model 65 in 4").
Its light enough for girls to use, and heavy enough to soften recoil.
Chambered in .357mag, there for when you use 38sp out of it, it kicks less then 22LR.
But can use it to defend yourself, by getting 38+P.
Can shoot .357 mag when she is ready. And its accurate
and you can usualy find one for less then $275
My GF loves my 65..Audemus jura nostra defendere

Re: My wife is getting her first handgun anyone have any suggestions?
[QUOTE][If you are set on a revolver, try a Ruger Sp101. Reliable as hell, solid and 357 capable, with less of a recoil than the 2 you mentioned.
/QUOTE]
If she likes it, i agree. The only thing I would consider if going this route would be a set of hogue grips for it, makes a huge difference in how the gun feels and recoils.
