Mounting scope with a dab of RTV silicone???
A friend of mine mounts all of his scopes with a dab of RTV silicone under the bases and rings before he torques them down. I also seen on gun nutz that Davis Petzal does this also. I guess it's supossed to be a lapping alternative that protects the scope tube and locks it in place. Does any one else do this and what are your thoughts?
I am remounting a new scope on a browning a-bolt 300 win mag using leupold dovetail standard rings and a .223 rem 700 custom gun I built for varmint hunting using talley rings.

I like to place a small amount of bacon grease or squeeze cheese on the rings and then clamp them down. Wingsauce will do if you don't have the good stuff.
I always sleep with my guns when you are gone

Sure isn't going to replace lapping. Shitty ring/scope contact is what it is unless you lap it. The RTV will probably work some as a weak adhesive but if your ring fit is that poor you need an adhesive then you got issues.

Re: Mounting scope with a dab of RTV silicone???
I wouldn't put silicone between the bases and the receiver, if you are shearing base screws buy better screws from Brownells or upgrade to 8-40 screws. A thin film of silicone might help with scope slippage but, it needs to be thin.
A better product than RTV silicone for your rings is 3M ScotchKote. Ring lapping is likely the most misunderstood and overdone "improvement" folks can do.
FWIW, in Germany scopes and bases are routinely epoxied to the rifle and rings.
YMMV

I've seen clear finger nail polish used. Works like lock tight.

If you do anything you should bed the base with JB weld, if you want to know how there are plenty of videos on youtube. I did this with my 308 tactical rifle using a Night Force 1 piece 20 MOA, results are a perfect mate to the receiver.
