What do truck drivers do??
I started a previous thread about traveling across America in a RV Motorhome with a handgun or home defense gun. I am curious, what do truck drivers do who carry handguns while they are working, driving, sleeping at a truck stop and traveling through different states?? On a cross country trip say through NY or NJ what would a truck driver do with his or her gun?

Re: What do truck drivers do??
I know for a fact that truck drivers whom carry new uranium fuel rods into nuclear power plants are UNARMED.... ha! I found it funny that those guys aren't allowed to carry, NOR are escorted by ANY type of security transport. So they don't have to worry about what to do with their guns... they have to leave them at home.

Like Jakebrake said or they get one of those "Firearms Rules for the 50 States" books and/or an app for their phone to see what is legal where. In a State like New York or Maryland, you just drive through, don't stop for nothing until you are across the boarder.

Re: What do truck drivers do??
Most don't carry because not only is it a pain to travel and stop in different states (and OTR drivers don't always know where they will be stopping) but most drive company trucks and most companies don't allow firearms in their trucks.
There are probably a few company drivers that ignore company policy and ignore state laws, there are a few owner operators who ignore the law but most drivers just don't carry. As was said earlier, there are a few places drivers have to go where they are subjected to searches and any DOT officer can climb up in your truck and take a look (there is no bill of rights protection when it comes to searching commercial vehicles). The sleeper compartment is kind of a grey area as far as searches go. There's nothing in writing that says the DOT can't take a look in the sleeper but it's commonly considered a safe zone, but if they want to look in the sleeper they can legally do so.
Bottom line is, truck drivers are subject to the same laws as everyone else (minus the search and seizure protection), just like everyone else some will adhere to the law and some won't, that's what they do.
This reminds me of a driver I knew (one of my former students) who told me he got pulled off the scales and around to the inspection station because it looked like he was drinking when he filled out his log book the day before. He was tired the night before when he stopped, his log entry was sloppy, he misspelled the city he stopped in and over ran a line on his graph. The officer literally told him "it looks like you were drinking" and he searched the whole interior of his truck looking for alcohol. Believe it or not, that was a completely legal search. There was no alcohol or an apology.Last edited by ray h; July 12th, 2015 at 11:07 PM.

Re: What do truck drivers do??
Depends on what part of the country a trucker is based out of and territories he drives.
I knew plenty of truckers in the Midwest and south who carried everywhere because they could and were allowed (owners operator)
But here in the north east there are so damn stupid laws who knows.

Re: What do truck drivers do??
Not quite as you were told. There is over watch, but they don't see it. The list of security steps is long and overlapping. Security Teams, aviation over watch, gps tracking on the tractor and the trailer and the load, some of the loads aren't even anything more than a comparable weight to what the real load would weigh.
The USAF base I was assigned to had two Kenworth VIT 's painted as a civilian company, outfitted with armor, gun ports, run flat tires, a shitload of commas, and a complete 12 man security detail with their own assigned air assets. They were used for fuel rods, gold shipments, warheads, currency, all sorts of stuff that you would never think of.
On top of all that, SEVERAL ABC agencies maintain Quick Reaction Teams that are available very quickly.

Hookers, guns, drugs, and uranium fuel rods... doesn't get any more "mom and Apple pie" than that!
