Default Choose only one: Large bore revolver or 1911

Just as the title says: if you could choose only one of these two platforms, with self defense (carry and home) as the primary purpose.

    Big-bore revolver: Smith &Wesson N-frame (model 29, 27, 28, 58, 57, 22-4, 25), pinned barrel and recessed chambers.

    OR:

1911: 45 auto, single stack, any manufacturer.

For me, I like both. 1911s are great. But, for me, a Pinned and Recessed N-Frame is what I'd choose .

    Thoughts?

Of what you listed I would say the Model 29. The 25 is the only other real big bore but the .44 magnum is more versatile the either the .45 Colt or ACP on the N frame platform. Stepping outside the S&W box I'd would and did go with a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull. This is for a general purpose big bore.

For an everyday carry gun I'd go with the K frame model 19 or 66. Or even the 686.

    Good choices. You're right the M27 and 28 are not big bores. M29, 57, 58, 25, 22-4 are .41 caliber and up.

I love my fixed sight N-frame, Model 58. Seems like the perfect fighting handgun with tremendous wallop.

I missed the 22. For me big bore starts a .429. There's any thing wrong with the .41's and smaller they are all capable cartridges. I've always wanted a .41 and never got around to it may well be the best compromise cartridge you listed bridging the gap from .357 to .44. I'm surprised you didn't include the model 24 as a choice.

Right, the .44 spl. Should be included.

My first 'big' revolver was the model 58. Traded it away like an idiot a year or two ago, and I just got replacement.

Honestly, there isn't that big a difference b/w standard .41 mag (210 gr. @ 1350) and a standard .44 mag (240 gr. @ 1250). The 44 mag handles heavier slugs, but a stiff .41 mag in the 250 grain weight will do anything on the lower 48.

Get a model 58 or 57 sometime; I think you'll really like it

I'll take the Model 57 with Webley Mk VI in 0.455 as a "backup". Dave_n

I'm left handed. Revolver reloads are slow and clumsy for me. 1911 all the way.

I'll have to go 1911 all day.

    Make mine a Model 25-2. Moon-clipped .45 ACP.
