Id say Glock 17 or 21. Depending on if he need a specific caliber... Glock is THE standard firearm for most law enforcement these days.

What academy is he going to? Most police academy's supply their own guns. I will be starting police academy next Monday and they supply Smith and Wesson 3913's and or 5906's. In fact they will not allow you to bring a different gun except for the final qualification in which case you can bring your department issue duty gun.

To answer your question otherwise. Some of the more popular duty guns are the Glock 19,17,23,22, Sig 226 or Sig 2340, Beretta 92 or 96, HK USP, Smith and Wesson M&P, and the Springfield XD line. I probably left out a few, which others will chime in on shortly.

Hope this helps (I wish I could pick my own gun for the Academy)

I would truly be supprised if they diddn't supply their own guns, especially in DC!

Wish him good luck and tell him to get alot of running in before he takes that physical exam. Out of 25 people that showed up for the physical fitness test only 9 of us made it through.
