    Exclamation 10.5" AR Too Loud?

Im starting to re-think my choice for my first SBR.
I had planned on getting a Sig Sauer 556 SBR with side folding stock (pic:http://www.sigsauer.com/upFiles/cata...heroDetail.jpg).
But from talk online it looks as though most people with SBR's in 556mm caliber say its way too loud and the shock wave is almost unbearable.

Ive never shot one so I don't know first hand.
Id like to hear input from you folks with hands on experience.
Keep in mind this SBR will mostly be used as a vehicle gun and possibly in the future even some armed security work at a facility.

My other option could be a 9mm carbine SBR like a 11.5" AR or even the new Sig Sauer MPX ( pic:http://www.sigsauer.com/upFiles/cata...etail-Hero.jpg)
While the 9mm SBR would have less energy than the 556mm, it would offer far less muzzle blast and noise.
Over penetration with 9mm would be less to worry about too.

Also, at this time a suppressor is NOT an option.

What do you recommend? Stick with a SBR in 556?
Or would a 9mm Carbine SBR meet my needs better?

I have a 11.5" and I think it is similar to a 16" with regards to sound/shockwave. Maybe I'm missing something...............

I think the much larger difference in my case is that my 11.5" rifle is a carbine length and the 16" is a midlength. IMHO, that is where the difference lies.

What do you mean your 11.5 ar is "carbine length"?
Does your 11.5" have an extra long muzzle device permanently attached to it?
Or is it an official SBR?

My 11.5 is significantly louder than my 16. I would NOT fire it without hearing pro, especially indoors or from a vehicle. It won't be my HD gun unless/until I get a suppressor.

He is talking about the length of the gas tube.

Yes, 10.5 is louder. I wouldn't own one without a suppressor, but if you're not able to get one now then so be it. The 9mm gun would be quieter and if the intention is vehicle/security work that has ranges that are ok for the ballistics of a 9mm pistol caliber carbine then that may be the best bet.

A lot of the excess blast on 5.56 SBR's is due to unburned powder/unexpanded gas exiting the barrel. It can be mitigated with very specific loads mimicking those designed for use in Thompson Contender pistols--with very diligent care and attention.

Although he is not likely to be hand loading duty or self defense rounds.

I have a 10.5" AR SBR. Yes they are loud, but they balance real nice plus easier to move around in a CQB situation, especially vehicles.

I have an 8" AK SBR in 5.45x39 (a caliber which is similar in bullet weight and muzzle velocity to 5.56) and I have never noticed it to be excessively loud.
