Mauser 98
So I have this Mauser 98 from my Grandfather, no I don't want to sell it. Somewhere along the line somebody "sporterized" it. They made a poor attempt. For the most part I'd say the historical value is gone and it's not much more than a shooter now. I'd like to have it chambered in something easier to find. I thought about 308 but also 22-250 or 223.
Your thoughts?
Here are some bad pics:

My thought? Buy some surplus 8mm and shoot it.

Re: Mauser 98
Agreed. 8mm is very easy to find. I just got 380 rounds of good ammo for 32 bucks. If you don't like surplus you can find new production for around 10 bucks or so a box. It is a very good round, too.

8mm is not hard to find...and is a very powerful round. I have a Mauser VK98 VG5. Commercial non-corrosive ammo is readily available for about $8 for 25 rounds at Walmart...I buy military surplus for about $3.50 for 15 rounds at Senica Arms.

Re: Mauser 98
Thanks all. I figured 308 would be about the easiest to convert it to. I have 3 or so boxs of 8x57 ammo for it. The gun has issues though. It strings the shots in a vertical line, no real group at all. I made sure all the scope screws were tight and checked the stock to see if it was putting pressure on the barrel. I'm no gunsmith so I concluded something was FUBAR.
91XLT, I'd be interested in some pics of that rifle..."The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil but, because of the people who do nothing about them."

Re: Mauser 98
I would try it with quality 8mm mauser ammo first. if it shoots well leave it alone. 8 mauser brass is easily formed from 30-06 brass and quality ammunition can be loaded quite easily.
Try it you may like it.An enemy of liberty is no friend of mine!I do not owe respect to anyone who would enslave me by government force, nor is it wise for such a person to expect it!

If you think you have the right not to be offended. I suggest you promptly purchase a toe attachment and a twelve gauge. One time use is all that is necessary.
