Need S&W gunsmith near Philadelphia
I have 1950 S&W Target .44spl that needs to go to a good Gunsmith within driving distance of Philadelphia . Anybody know of a good one. It was made in 1955 so parts may be a problem.
Thanks
Kevin

Mark Hartshorne at Pinnacle High Performance is a custom revolversmith. Not sure if he would take in simple repairs. What does your gun need?

It's locked up. Something with the cylinder latch not going back when the cylinder is closed.
S&W won't touch it since it's made before 1958 ,parts aren't available .

A little more detail with the problem might help. It could be something real simple such as a loose extractor rod or dirt/unburnt powder under the extractor star.

Re: Need S&W gunsmith near Philadelphia
It's not dirty . I just picked this gun up knowing you can't pull the trigger. When the cylinder closes the pin in the middle goes into the hole and pushes the cylinder release bar?back allowing the hammer to be cocked . On this gun that's not happening. If you push the cylinder release backwards you can cock the hammer.

Re: Need S&W gunsmith near Philadelphia
Is the center pin under in the cylinder spring tension?
ETA: If you can hold the thumb piece back and cock and fire the weapon this tells me center pin is not under sufficient pressure to push the bolt back. The bolt is what you see centered on the recoil shield and is connected to the thumb piece.Last edited by pennlineman; May 30th, 2015 at 11:22 PM.

OK, when you hold the thumb piece back to cock the hammer do you do so with the cylinder closed or open?

Re: Need S&W gunsmith near Philadelphia
With the cylinder closed ,push back on the release and you can cock and pull the trigger. Do it 2/3 times and you can then pull the trigger in double action and it's fine. Open the cylinder and the trigger and hammer lock up again. What scares me is the side plate screws are messed up and that makes me wonder if any of the inside parts have been replaced with the wrong ones. But this gun was to cheap to pass up .
