Cool Emmaus man shoots self at safety class.

Emmaus man accidentally shoots self at gun safety class.

An Emmaus man taking a gun safety class in Bethlehem accidentally shot himself in the leg Saturday, according to city police..

The 36-year-old man, who police did not identify, was taking a class for people seeking a concealed weapon permit shortly after 1 p.m., when his gun went off as he was returning it to its holster, said Bethlehem Police Chief Mark Diluzio.

The class was being conducted by a private company at the Bethlehem Police Department shooting range in Lower Saucon Township.

"While reholstering his gun, the weapon apparently got caught on some fabric from his shirt and it accidentally discharged," Diluzio said. "It's not a criminal matter. It was an accident."

The bullet hit the man in the groin area and grazed his thigh, according to Bethlehem Paramedics who transported him to St. Luke's Hospital, Diluzio said. Paramedics said the man was in stable condition.

The company, who Diluzio did not identify, often conducts classes at the Bethlehem Police gun range for police and civilians who have obtained permits to carry a concealed weapon.

During the incident, police closed a section of Lower Saucon roadway called "the Narrows" leading into the range.

I was in a class recently with a guy whose shirt was getting in the way nearly every time he holstered his Glock. I suggested to one of the instructors that he might want to say something to the guy. The instructor's response: "He'll figure it out sooner or later." A little while later, another instructor noticed and told him to tuck in his shirt. People are way too cavalier about holstering. Aside from untucked shirts, I see people getting the muzzle started into the holster and then quickly ramming it home. Those are great ways to shoot yourself.

Is this more a young guy thing, not wanting to tuck in a shirt? I nearly always have mine tucked in.
