Have you ever eaten goundhog?
Have you ever eaten Marmota Monax AKA Groundhog, whistle pig, etc...?
If so, do you have a recipe to share???
How did it taste????
AND, for your amusement, here is a little joke:
QUESTION: What is the difference between a NORTHERN Zoo and a SOUTHERN Zoo?
ANSWER: At a northern Zoo beside the animals' cages they put a description of the animal, its habitat, and mating and feeding habits.
At a southern Zoo next to the animals cage the zookeepers post a recipe.Last edited by Hokkmike; May 6th, 2015 at 04:01 PM.

Re: Have you ever eaten goundhog?
Yes , why not. Folks used to eat it more often back in the day.
The injun's ate it.
Got much more meet than a tree rat.
We normally crock pot it in a stew.
Wife does ad a McComicks roast beef seasoning. But she do that without g'hog also.
If you ate it , you wouldnt know it wasnt beef even with the look of the meat.
I/we shot a lot of g'hogs before my kid once asked me to inform them when we were going to eat them ....... I had to break the news we had been for some time. Or else I'd had a mountain of them in the freezer.
You can also crock pot them in delgrosso sauce or of your choice but to be honest, I ain't a big sauce lover and don't like it as much that way.
2 more things.
skinning and guttin 2 g'hogs will make your knife about worthless.
I always here how hard deer are on a knife blade , yeah well you aint seen nothing.
And
If you're skinnin your g'hogs along a road to put in the cooler , folks will stop , stare and not believe you when you tell them.Last edited by Boondox; May 6th, 2015 at 06:23 PM.

Re: Have you ever eaten goundhog?
I've always been tempted to keep a packet of 'theater blood' in the car. Then, when I am taking the hide off a road-killed deer, and someone slows, or stops, I can just wipe my face in it and act like I just took another bite and turn and smile at them! That'd be a hoot, huh?

Boiled it, bread it and fry it. Tastes like chicken.

If there is anything left to eat - you aren't using a big enough gun!
It should be nothing but red mist!RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Re: Have you ever eaten goundhog?
When I was younger the PA Dutch neighbor wanted the ground hogs we shot. He only wanted the ones that were smaller than our forearms, from elbow to wrist. He said leave the rest for the buzzards. He would cook them with sauerkraut in a slow and low fashion. It was good, in a living on a Farm sort of way. But, we also ate oppossum on Thanksgiving this year, so anything could be ate :-)
Be safe (and anything can be ate, if it is cooked slow, with the right seasonings).

Rules are written in the stone,
Break the rules and you get no bones,
all you get is ridicule, laughter,
and a trip to the house of pain.
