Berks County License to Carry
Effective Monday July 21, 2008 the Berks County Sheriff's Department will be issueing license to carry firearms while the applicants wait. There will be no more reference forms to have filled out. Applications will no longer be accepted through the mail and must be brought in in person to have them processed.

Re: Berks County License to Carry
This is great news to me. After hearing about other counties that did this I was wondering when Berks would do the same.

Re: Berks County License to Carry
Sent my application in on July 14th. Guess I will be getting it back in the mail or do you think they will process it?

My guess would be they'd continue to process ones that were postmarked before they made the announcement of the change. You could call and ask, that's probably the only way to find out for sure.

While slightly off topic, does anyone know if Sheriff Weaknecht will sign Class III Form 4's while one waits? If not, can they be mailed in? I know Sheriff Jozwiack wouldn't do them while your waited but did allow you to mail them in.

Re: Berks County License to Carry
I assume you will still need to list references on the application but there are just no seperate forms for them to fill out anymore? Will the Sheriff's office have time to check your references while you wait - assuming your references are even near the phone when you go in to apply? I have read here that some counties don't bother contacting references at all.
I'll be moving to Berks Co from NY in a couple weeks. I don't know anyone in Berks Co well enough to be references, so I hope they will accept references from NY. I've read here that this depends on your county, who you talk to at the sheriff's office, and what kind of mood they're in that day.
No matter what, it's still gotta be better than the up to two year wait in NY just for a permit to buy a handgun.
